The project aims to investigate the combustion behavior of short-chain hydrocarbons at high pressures (> 50 bar) and low temperatures (600 – 1000 K). This research is expected to improve the understanding of the combustion chemistry of larger hydrocarbons independent of the origin of the fuel, i.e., whether it is produced from fossil sources, from biomass or from renewable electricity, with the global aim of reducing pollutant emissions and improving fuel performance.

Ignition delay time (IDT) and speciation measurements at high pressures will be performed in a unique high-pressure rapid compression machine (RCM) and a shock tube (ST). These measurements can help to get a profound understanding of the oxidation process of different fuel species, to identify the deficiencies of the kinetic mechanism, and to develop possible approaches for further improvements of these.
