The project aims to investigate the CO2-reduction potentials of a combustion system based on the Spark Assisted Compression Ignition (SACI) in combination with an active pre-chamber. This type of combustion system is expected to improve the thermal efficiency at part load as well as the peak efficiency due to a high dilution level and increased combustion stability.
Fundamental research at the HGD helps to provide validation targets for subsequent CFD simulations. Furthermore, combustion specific parameters can be determined and refined without the disturbing influences of an internal combustion engines. This knowledge helps to apply different strategies regarding injection timing, ignition energy and pre-chamber geometries at the internal combustion engine.
