The EU project “Take-Off” is a European research effort aiming at developing green aviation fuels from regenerative sources to address the need to reduce CO2 emissions in the transportation sector. This will be achieved through the development and testing of sustainable aviation fuels produced from the non-fossil resources CO2 and green H2. In the “Take-Off” project, the complete value chain of sustainable aviation fuels will be developed and validated, one part of which addresses the emissions of aviation fuels. The HGD collaborates with the VKA of RWTH Aachen University and with the FEV Europe GmbH, also situated in Aachen, to understanding the formation of NOX during combustion of potential sustainable aviation fuels. In this research, the Rapid Compression Machine (RCM) is used to mimic the conditions in a jet turbine (high temperature and high pressure) and a spark system is used to trigger ignition. Then, the flame propagation velocity is measured and correlated to NOX formation through simulations conducted by FEV.
